Introduction

The Magnets, Superconductors and Cryostats (MSC) group in the Technology Department (TE) has the mandate to design, build and measure the superconducting and normal conduction magnets for the CERN accelerator complex; integrating them into the CERN accelerator complex; design magnetic cryostats and perform magnet quality control. The group also provides accelerator operation support for magnets, magnet performance and devices.

The Cryostat and Machine Integration Section (CMI) is responsible for the design and construction of cryostats for accelerator superconducting devices, the integration of technical systems and installation in the machine. It is also in charge of the maintenance of the LHC SC magnet cryostats and the construction of spare parts. These activities take place in a dedicated facility on the CERN site, which is complemented by a storage building. The CMI Section is currently working on the design and construction of various equipment for the work packages of the HiLumi HL-LHC project (https://hilumilhc.web.cern.ch), and on the maintenance of the LHC SC magnetic cryostats.

Functions

As an Electromechanical Technician for the construction of cryo-assemblies in the CMI section, you will have to:

  • Build and assemble cryo-magnets and superconducting devices for test stations and particle accelerators.
  • Contribute to development programs and prototyping activities related to the engineering and construction of cryo-assemblies.
  • Manufacture mechanical and sheet metal parts, on plan and custom-made in some cases, with a view to their integration into cryo-magnets and superconducting devices.
  • Produce, install and commission custom tooling for the construction and assembly of cryo-magnets and superconducting devices.
  • Develop and produce instrumentation feed-through systems and end caps for cryo-magnets and superconducting devices.

Qualifications

Technical certificate or general secondary education or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical engineering, electromechanical engineering or a related field.

Live:

  • Proven experience in electromechanics, manufacturing techniques and assembly of complex systems with tight tolerances.
  • Demonstrated experience in fabricating mechanical parts on conventional machine tools such as lathes and milling machines, as well as forming shells on rolling or bending machines and forming precision metal pipes.
  • Experience in the development of one-of-a-kind systems, which require the construction of mock-ups and special tooling.
  • Experience in manufacturing and assembling vacuum vessels and cryostats.
  • Experience in the development and manufacture of plugs for watertight penetrations in non-metallic materials would be an asset.

Technical skills :

  • Construction, testing and installation of electromechanical equipment and systems.
  • Manufacture of mechanical parts.
  • Good command of reading technical drawings, including ISO-GPS sizing.
  • Knowledge of sheet metal and pipe forming techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of computer-aided design software such as AutoCAD, Catia or SolidWorks.

Conditions of employment

Type of contract: Fixed-term contract (4 years). Under certain conditions, holders of fixed-term contracts can apply for a permanent position.

  • Night work, Sundays and public holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
