We have a great opportunity in Somerset to join our Highways and Transport Department. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to help develop and oversee the delivery of our ambitious motorway and transport infrastructure improvement programme, which includes new cycle lanes, junction improvements and roads, as well as involvement in new bus and train station infrastructure.

Our active team command all motorway and transport services for Somerset including passenger and parking services, motorway maintenance, infrastructure programmes, rights of way, traffic management , engineering and road safety programs. We are responsible for policy and strategy development, new transportation plans and programs for cities and transportation corridors, active travel policy and programs, transportation system decarbonization plans, offers and business cases for new financing; and determining the most appropriate means of service delivery (considering in-house or contracted services, including the development of procurement strategies). We work closely with the Council’s operational departments who are responsible for delivery.

Here’s what you can expect to do

You will contribute to the development of our pipeline of motorway and transport infrastructure improvements which are needed to improve strategic connections across Somerset and beyond, as well as to address more localized issues in our towns; ensure continued economic growth; help oversee projects throughout their life cycle, from conceptual stages through construction completion and ongoing monitoring.

You will help move programs and projects forward at an early stage and help develop and submit compelling business cases for investment, working with funding bodies to ensure a continuous pipeline of investments.

You will work closely with colleagues across the organization as projects are developed in detail through the stages of option selection, consultation, design, planning, procurement of land and supplies. You will maintain a keen interest in programs during and beyond construction to ensure the desired strategic outcomes for the investment are achieved.

A few things about you

You will be/will have:

  • Graduated to university level or equivalent through relevant professional development.
  • Experience in transportation planning, infrastructure financing, and infrastructure project development and delivery.
  • Demonstrable experience of working in partnership, including the ability to work with multi-agency groups and projects to deliver services and initiatives.
  • Demonstrable experience of engaging with communities and customer feedback channels to shape and inform improved services.
