Truck owners denounce the transport of ore by pipeline
A massive rally of truck owners was held here on Thursday to protest against the transportation of iron ore through slurry pipeline which negatively affects the economic conditions of residents of Keonjhar district.
More than 4,000 truck owners from across the district gathered at the Kali Puja land and spoke out against the anti-public policy of industrial houses by transporting their iron ore from local mines in Anugul, Kalinganagar and Paradip through pipelines .
Their main focus was the sludge pipeline from Barbil to Paradip which is under construction. They alleged that after the construction of this pipeline is completed, a large number of trucks will stop moving, throwing truckers and their families out of work and a situation like that of Ethiopia, South Africa and of Sri Lanka cannot be excluded in the mining-rich district of Keonjhar. .
After KDTO Secretary Surya Narayan Kar, JATOA Secretary Sushanta Kumar Barik, Barbil Association Secretary Chandra Prasad Gupta and others addressed the meeting, a delegation went to deliver a memorandum to Keonjhar ADM Sushama Bilung in the absence of collector Ashish Thakray.
Political party leaders Mohan Charan Majhi, MLA (BJP), former district BJD chairman Ashish Chakrabarti and Subal Kumar Das (Congress) also expressed concern over the situation stemming from the slurry pipes and supported the truckers call for an “economic blockade”. ‘ for the benefit of the Keonjhar people.
